The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority is considering a plan that will place all the telephone poles in Connecticut under the management of the utilities.
Under the plan supported by Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz, electric utilities Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating would solely manage all telephone poles, replacing the system where individual poles have individual owners.
Swanson Katz argued the central administration would eliminate red tape during emergencies such as power outages and increase coordination between the utilities, municipalities, the state Department of Transportation, whoever uses the pole.
The details of the pole administration, such as how much the utilities would be compensated, have not been determined.
