Builders and buyers of four high-efficiency homes across the state have won the sixth annual CT Zero Energy Challenge run by utilities Eversource and United Illuminating.
The contest recognizes those who build homes that have little to no net-energy consumption, meaning they offset energy use through conservation measures or by generating renewable energy.
There were two overall winners, who tied, and two winners selected based on their HERS Index score, which is a standardized measurement of energy performance.
The overall tied winners are:
Owners: James and Phoebe Katzin
Location: Litchfield
Builder: Revival Homes, New Hartford
Owners: Paul and Julia Torcellini Residence
Location: Eastford
Builder: Davis Contracting, Oxford, Mass.
The HERS Index winner is:
Owners: Lowell and Patricia Kallen Residence, Woodstock, Conn.
Location: Woodstock
Builder: Lehto Design/Build, Killingly, Conn.
The HERS Index winner without renewables is:
