On Thursday, UTC Power of South Windsor will start powering a residential development in New York City with a 400-kilowatt fuel cell.
The Octagon, a green housing complex on Roosevelt Island, will begin operating the fuel cell. It is the first time in New York state that such a large fuel cell provides heat and power for residents.
The Octagon is a former mental hospital, and the property achieved silver certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, program from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The UTC Power fuel cell is one of several clean power generators at The Octagon, including Manhattan’s largest solar array and tidal turbines.
