UTC robotics teams to vie for world title

Ten Connecticut high-school robotics teams, including one from South Windsor, will compete later this month in the 2014 FIRST Robotics World Championship in St. Louis, Mo.

Perennial sponsor United Technologies Corp. of Hartford is backing 23 of the finalist teams, including the 10 from Connecticut, at the April 24-26 competition, authorities said Monday.

Three of the Connecticut teams were crowned regional winners of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) New England Championship in Boston on April 11-12: Team #177, the Bobcats from South Windsor High; Team #230, the Gaelhawks from Shelton High; and Team #4055, Team NRG representing Northwestern Regional High in Winsted.

Dozens of UTC employees volunteer annually as mentors for individual teams, helping student participants learn about science and engineering.
