South Windsor fuel cell manufacturer UTC Power helped create the 2011 Sustainable Project of the Year, according to the Association for Retail Environments.
The Albertson’s grocery store in Clairemont, Calif. received the award in May because UTC Power’s 400-kilowatt PureCell fuel cell increased the energy efficiency of the building by 60 percent.
The PureCell system creates electricity through an electrochemical process and captures the heat byproduct to use for hot water, heating and refrigeration.
The Association for Retail Environments is a national trade association based in Florida.
