Hartford’s United Technologies Corp. says supermarkets are lining up to learn more about its money-savingĀ fuel cell technology, the result of a successful collaboration with upscale grocer Whole Foods Market to power its stores in Glastonbury and Dedham, Mass.
UTC Power and Whole Foods teamed up to present a fuel-cell case study this week at the 2009 Food Marketing Institute’s Energy & Technical Services Conference in Indian Wells, Calif.
“We are seeing increased interest from both supermarkets and the big box retail industry for our fuel cells,” said Neal Montany, director of UTC Power’s stationary fuel cell business.
UTC Power provides fuel cells for Whole Foods Market, Price Chopper and Shaw’s Star Market stores.
Whole Foods Market has chosen to power two of its New England stores with UTC Power fuel cells. A 200-kilowatt UTC Power fuel cell has powered a Whole Foods’ Glastonbury store since March 2008.
A 400-kilowatt fuel cell will supply 90 percent of the power and all of the hot water needs for the new Dedham store, to be the largest Whole Foods Market in the Northeast.
