UTC fuel cell hits milestone

Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp. announced Monday that its next-generation stationary fuel cell fleet reached 100,000 hours of field operations.

The PureCell Model 400 System has produced enough energy to power more than 3,000 homes for a year. The system has a 10-year cell stack life, leading the industry, giving its twice the durability of the previous UTC fuel cell fleet.

“By providing clean, efficient and continuous base-load energy for buildings, fuel cells have become a proven and crucial component of the energy independence roadmap,” Mike Brown, UTC Power vice president of government affairs and general counsel, said in a statement.

This particular fuel cell can provide 400 kilowatts of electricity push another 1.7 million Btu/hour of heat for combined heat and power applications. The next-generation model was first introduced 2009 and serves customers in Connecticut, California, New York, Wisconsin and South Korea.

As part of the expansion of its fuel cell fleet, UTC completed an upgrade to the production facility in South Windsor.
