UTC fuel cell bus wins European award

South Windsor-based UTC Power and Belgian bus manufacturer Van Hool announced that their next-generation fuel cell hybrid electric bus destined for Connecticut’s transit fleet has won a European environmental award.

The 40-foot vehicle was honored with the Grand Environment Award during its debut at Belgium’s Busworld Europe Kortrijk 2009 exhibition that ends today.

The bus will be powered by a UTC Power PureMotion Model 120 fuel cell power system.  Van Hool has orders for 16 of the new buses for use in Connecticut and Connecticut urban transit fleets, to be delivered from now through 2010.

Van Hool also built the early generation version of the UTC-powered hybrid-electric bus that serves the Star Shuttle route in downtown Hartford.
