UTC changes mind on elevator, climate controls merger

Farmington’s United Technologies Corp. said its Otis Elevator and UTC Climate, Controls & Security businesses will be separate once more.

UTC has named Philippe Delpech as Otis president and Robert J. McDonough as CCS president, effective immediately.

Two years ago, citing a desire to capture growth opportunities in emerging markets, UTC merged the Otis and CCS businesses into a single unit called UTC Building & Industrial Systems.

In July, Geraud Darnis announced his retirement as CEO of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, and the company did not name a successor. Darnis will stay on through January to ensure a smooth transition, UTC said Thursday.

In a statement, UTC CEO Gregory Hayes did not discuss the decision by his predecessor, Louis Chenevert, to merge the units.

“As the world’s largest supplier of commercial building systems, UTC has tremendous growth opportunities driven by global urbanization and an expanding middle class,” Hayes said. “By creating clear lines of authority and accountability, this new organizational structure better positions Otis and CCS to capitalize on these opportunities with our innovative, energy-efficient products.”

Delpech was most recently chief operating officer of intercontinental operations for the building and industrial systems business, while McDonough was COO for the Americas.

Softness in Otis’ European business was one of the factors cited in UTC’s decision in July to lower its earnings outlook for the second time this year.
