The U.S. Postal Service has filed a notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission proposing to increase the price of First Class stamps from 66 cents to 68 cents.
It would be the USPS’ fifth rate hike in three years.
In addition, USPS is seeking to increase the price of domestic postcards from 51 cents to 53 cents, along with international postcards and letters from $1.50 to $1.55.
Also, USPS wants to increase the price of other services, including Certified Mail and Post Office Box rental fees, money order fees and the cost to purchase insurance when mailing an item.
USPS said the increases are due to inflationary pressures and the effects of a “previously defective pricing model.”
The Postal Regulatory Commission will review the changes before they take effect.
USPS is an independent federal establishment, mandated to be self-financing, and generally does not receive tax dollars for operating expenses.
