U.S. awards $335K to retrain idled Mohegan Sun workers

The U.S. Department of Labor on Wednesday announced a $335,400 national emergency grant to provide training and employment services to 100 workers laid off from Mohegan Sun resort casino in September.

The Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board will use the federal money to provide workers assistance with resume writing, interviewing skills and vocational assessments. The grant provides training for jobs in high-growth sectors, such as advanced manufacturing, health care and energy.

“The Labor Department is committed to helping all Americans who have lost jobs through no fault of their own,” Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis said in a press release. “This grant will provide training and other services to help dislocated workers prepare for good jobs in Connecticut’s growing industries.”

National emergency grants are part of the Department of Labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded to states along specific guidelines.
