Urban League of Greater Hartford appoints new CEO

The Urban League of Greater Hartford (ULGH) on Wednesday tapped a primary care executive from Pittsburgh as its CEO and president.

The Hartford nonprofit, which provides services focused on adult education, workforce development and economic enrichment, said David J. Hopkins, former CEO of of Primary Care Health Services Inc. (PCHS), began leading the organization Tuesday in place of Adrienne W. Cochrane.

Cochrane, who received Hartford Business Journal’s Lifetime Achievement award last year, served the post for nearly eight years before stepping down in April to join YWCA’s Hartford Region as its chief executive.

ULGH said it conducted a national search for Cochrane’s successor before landing on Hopkins. Kathy Reilly served as interim CEO and president during the search.

While leading PCHS, Hopkins for three years managed a $12 million budget and a staff of 150 workers, ULGH said. He previously served as an independent consultant and as senior vice president at PNC Bank, where he financed projects for public entities and led its community development bank, among other tasks.

Hopkins earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Pittsburgh’s Point Park University in community engagement, advocacy and policy.

ULGH’s leadership transition is being supported by a grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

Founded in 1964, the nonprofit, based at 140 Woodland St., says its mission is to reduce economic disparities through programs, services and educational opportunities.
