Upward mobility: QU opens door to community-college transfers

Graduates of Gateway Community College in New Haven and Bridgeport’s Housatonic Community College may now “seamlessly” transfer to Quinnipiac University under an agreement announced this week.

Under terms of the deal, GCC and HCC graduates with a minimum GPA of 3.0 are guaranteed admission to a bachelor’s-degree program at Quinnipiac as third-year (junior) students. Transferring students must have attained an associate in arts or associate in science in business, college of technology engineering science, nursing or allied health degree from either of the community colleges.

In addition, students can take one Quinnipiac course per year free of charge while enrolled at Gateway or Housatonic, with a maximum of three courses per student.

The agreement, signed Wednesday by QU President Judy Olian and Paul Broadie II, president of both Gateway and Housatonic, becomes effective immediately. It applies to transfer students between the schools, honors students, dual-enrollment students and online students.

“As outlined in our new strategic plan, developing tighter and more convenient transfer arrangements for community college students expands opportunity, builds inclusive excellence, and provides access to the rich portfolio of learning and growth opportunities at Quinnipiac,” said Olian in a statement.

“This transfer articulation agreement creates a wonderful opportunity for hard-working community college students in pursuit of a higher degree,” said Broadie. “The opportunity to take free classes at Quinnipiac University while completing their associate degrees provides remarkable access and incentive for our students.”
