UnitedHealth posts higher 3Q revenue, tightens outlook

UnitedHealth Group said it grew its revenue 12 percent to $30.62 billion in its third quarter, but tightened its full-year profit outlook.

Profits were $1.57 billion, up slightly from $1.56 billion. The company tightened its annual profit outlook to between $5.40 and $5.50 per share, compared to $5.35 and $5.50.

The company’s UnitedHealthcare business, which has significant Connecticut operations, saw its revenue grow from $25.5 billion to $28.4 billion, while its Optum health services business grew revenue from $7.2 billion to $9.6 billion. The parent lost $7.37 billion on eliminations.

As of the three months ended Sept. 30, UnitedHealth Group served 89.7 million individuals across all of its businesses, up from 77.6 million a year ago.

Earlier this month, UnitedHealth cut approximately 2,200 of its Connecticut Medicare Advantage doctors.
