UnitedHealth keeping 2,000 jobs in Hartford

UnitedHealth Group and the governor announced today the health insurer will keep more than 2,000 employees in downtown Hartford when it moves offices to CityPlace at 185 Asylum Street.

UnitedHealth agreed to keep its workers in Hartford at least three years in return for a state pledge to contribute $1.5 million toward improvements in infrastructure and energy efficiency at CityPlace.

The health insurer’s current downtown lease at Connecticut River Plaza at 450 Columbus Blvd. expires in 2010.

UnitedHealth has been downtown for more than 20 years. The company has another approximately 2,300 workers in other Connecticut locations, including Rocky Hill, Windsor and Trumbull.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell said the relocation itself is expected to create an additional 150 to 200 construction-related jobs during the next 12 to 18 months.

“This is a triumph for Connecticut, for UnitedHealth Group and for our state’s capital city — and welcome news to employees and their families at a time of terrible economic uncertainty,”  Rell said.
