UnitedHealth increases share buyback plan

Health insurer UnitedHealth Group Inc., with operations in Hartford, said Wednesday it plans to buy back as many as 120 million shares of its own stock.

The Minnesota company repurchased 74 million shares in 2009, and had about 23 million shares left under its previous buyback plan.

Those 23 million shares are included in the new repurchase plan. As of the end of 2009, the company had about 1.15 billion common shares outstanding.

UnitedHealth also declared an annual dividend of 3 cents a share for 2010, the same as in 2009. The latest dividend will be paid April 20 to shareholders of record as of April 6. (AP
