UnitedHealth exec on Forbes’ power women list

Gail Boudreaux, president of UnitedHealthcare who began her career with Aetna Inc. in Hartford, has been ranked No. 54 on Forbes’ list of the world’s most-powerful women.

UnitedHealthcare is the main health-insurance business for Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group Inc., which has major operations in Hartford, according to today’s online edition of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal. Boudreaux runs the most-profitable division of UnitedHealth Group.

Forbes cited Boudreaux’s consolidation of the company’s six national regions into four and her plans to grow profits by focusing on local markets. Boudreaux oversees 42,000 employees worldwide, and UnitedHealthcare insures more than 25 million people.

Boudreaux joined UnitedHealthcare in 2008 from Blue Cross and Blue Shield, where she oversaw operations in Illinois, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. She began her career at Aetna in 1982.
