UnitedHealth Group Inc., which has major operations in Hartford, plans to build a new $200 million corporate campus in its home state of Minnesota, the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reports.
Five years from now, when UnitedHealth expects to complete the 72-acre, 257,000-square-foot facility in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, it will house 6,700 workers and 1.5 million square feet of office space.
The new facility will be in addition to UnitedHealth’s 1.1 million-square-foot corporate headquarters about a half-mile northeast of that site in Minnetonka.
According to the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal, UnitedHealth has about 11,000 workers spread among roughly a dozen properties it owns or leases in the Twin Cities. Nationwide, it has about 87,000 employees in 16 million square feet.
UnitedHealth did recently make a commitment to Hartford. In August 2010, the company opened its 18 floors of new office space in CityPlace, after relocating from the Connecticut River Plaza.
The move included a $35 million investment for renovations. UnitedHealth agreed to keep 2,000 workers in Hartford for at least three years in return for a state pledge to contribute $1.5 million toward the relocation.
UnitedHealth has been in downtown Hartford for more than 20 years. The company also has employees in Rocky Hill, Windsor and Trumbull.
