United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut

Mission:

Our mission is to engage and bring together people and resources committed to the well-being of children and families in our community.

Who are you helping, and how?

We envision a community where opportunities are available for every child to succeed in school and for every family to have jobs that bring them financial security. We do this by investing in programs and services, leading community change initiatives and mobilizing both resources and volunteers.

Through these efforts, we ensure that children succeed in school, people have jobs that allow them to be financially secure and basic needs are met during tough times to keep people healthy. We don’t do it alone and we can’t do it without you.

Together, we can make futures brighter and ensure equitable outcomes for all by creating lasting solutions to complex challenges and addressing immediate needs. That is what it means to LIVE UNITED.

How did your organization achieve last year’s goals?

Last year, donor funds went toward meeting the following milestones:

• Nearly 90 percent of children up to age five achieved developmental benchmarks, such as language and literacy skill development.

• More than 10,000 households received no-cost tax preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, resulting in $27.5 million in refunds and credits returned to families.

• More than 107,000 calls were made to United Way 211 for information and referral services. 211 connects callers to critical health and human services in their community for free.

• More than 270,000 people in our region gained access to quality health services and emergency basic needs such as food and shelter.

Organization’s goals for the next 12 months

Goal 1: Children are ready for school and stay on track to graduate on time prepared for college or a career.

Goal 2: People learn financial skills and qualify for good-paying jobs with opportunities for advancement.

Goal 3: Promote equitable access to quality health care and wellness opportunities for children and families.

Goal 4: People who are going through tough times get the assistance they need, such as food and shelter.

Goal 5: Reduce racial disparities in educational, economic and health outcomes for people in central and northeastern Connecticut.

Goal 6: Continue to help families, asset-limited, income-constrained yet employed households in particular, recover from the long-term economic and educational impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Goal 7: Connect individuals with causes that they care about through volunteer experiences.

Goal 8: Raise funds through the United Way Community Campaign, special events and grants in support of local children and families.
