United Way invests $7.75M to support families

United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut has announced awards of $7.75 million in support of programs for children and families in the 40-town region it serves.

The awards support programs and initiatives that work to create lasting solutions for complex issues facing local children and families in the areas of education, financial stability and basic needs. Gregory C. Toczydlowski, chairman of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut’s board of directors, said the awards will address the root causes of community issues to ensure that youth graduate from high school, college and career ready, and that families are financially stable.

More than $4 million of the investment has been awarded to programs and initiatives meant to ensure children are prepared for kindergarten, become proficient readers by the end third grade, and stay on track through middle school.

More than $1 million will support programs and initiatives to connect lower-wage earning families with tools and opportunities to help them become financially secure, including job training and placement programs.
