United Way 2010 at $25.1M and counting

The 2010 United Way Community Campaign has ended with $25.1 million in pledges and contributions in hand, just shy of its goal, officials say.

The regional community chest, which supports social programs and services to 250,000 needy residents in 40 towns of central and northeastern Connecticut, had a 13-week fund drive goal of $25.8 million.

Travelers Cos. executive Andy Bessette, who chaired this year’s United Way drive, said 54,000 volunteers and employees in more than 760 workplaces were involved in the campaign.

Hartford-based United Technologies Corp., the state’s largest private employer, raised $6.54 million, or 26 percent of the total amount contributed through the United Way Community Campaign, authorities said.

United Way also welcomed 30 new donors into the Tocqueville Society, which recognizes donors who contribute $10,000 or more annually.
