United Rentals buys N.C.’s Coble Trench

United Rentals Inc. in Greenwich acquired a North Carolina firm specializing in renting out construction-safety equipment amid mourning for the company’s founder.

Meantime, United Rentals says Canadian antitrust regulators indicated they won’t oppose its pending $1.9 billion takeover of rival RSC Holdings, of Scottsdale, Ariz.

United didn’t say Thursday what it paid for Coble Trench Safety, of Greensboro, N.C., and its 11 mid-Atlantic and southeastern U.S. branches.

The sudden death of founder Tom Coble put the company in play, authorities said.

With the acquisition, United say its trench presence grows to 93 locations in 28 states and Canada.

United and RSC announced jointly Thursday receipt of a “no-action letter” from the Canadian Competition Bureau, one of the conditions of their deal due to close this spring.

Both operate equipment-rental centers in Canada.
