United Illuminating president to retire

Anthony Vallillo will retire as president of New Haven-based electric utility United Illuminating after 44 years with the company.

Vallillo also will step down from his position as executive vice president of UI’s parent company, UIL Holdings. His last day with the companies will be Dec. 31.

James Torgerson, UIL’s chief executive officer, will assume the position of UI’s president following Vallillo’s retirement.

Vallillo is one of the longest tenured employees at UI, having started with the company as an assistant engineer in 1968. He oversaw numerous projects in the company’s history, including the 2010 acquisition of Southern Connecticut Gas, Connecticut Natural Gas, and Berkshire Gas for UIL Holdings.
