Union: New Haven lays off 16 officers

A police union official in New Haven is predicting longer response times and a more dangerous city because of the budget-driven layoffs of 16 officers, The Associated Press reports.

Union President Sgt. Louis Cavaliere called the layoffs a “disgusting embarrassment.”

The officers were informed Wednesday and must turn in their guns and badges on Thursday.

Cavaliere suggested that city residents arm themselves.

Those let got were the most recently hired and amount to about 4 percent of the force. They are worried about how they are going to provide for their families.

Mayor John DeStefano Jr. is expected to announce layoffs in other city departments in the near future.
