Orange electric utility United Illuminating plans to install 50,000 energy efficient street lights across its service territory over the next six years, saving $2.6 million.
The efficient LED lights will replace high-pressure sodium streetlight bulbs, expecting to save enough electricity to power 1,500 homes in a typical year.
The project will start in Stratford and Bridgeport and work its way through the 16 cities and towns in UI’s service territory through 2021.
The LEDs are expected to save UI’s municipal customers $2.6 million over 15 years. The bulbs last about 2.5 longer than the sodium bulbs and run 40 percent more efficiently.
