UI territory quadruples light bulb sales

Orange electric utility United Illuminating saw 362,244 sales of LED light bulbs in its territory in 2014, more than 400 percent more than were sold in 2013, according to the utility.

UI attributes part of the increase to the Great Light Bulb Exchange program launched in May by the Energize Connecticut initiative, where residents were incentivized to switch out their incandescent light bulbs for the most efficient LEDs.

Energize Connecticut is an initiative administered by UI and Berlin electric utility Connecticut Light & Power, using funds raised off a charge on ratepayer bills.

LEDs typically last up to 25 times longer and use about 80 percent less electricity than an incandescent.
