New Haven’s United Illuminating Co. has asked for state regulatory approval to increase its standard service rate by 53 percent starting Jan. 1.
UI wants to charge a standard service generation charge of 13.35 cents per kilowatt hour, up from the current rate of 8.67 cents. This supply price is separate from UI’s delivery rates and must be approved by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority. Â
UI purchases electricity from suppliers and passes the cost, with no profit added, directly to customers who are on the company’s standard service supply option. By law, the standard service price for residential and small commercial customers changes twice a year, on Jan. 1 and July 1.Â
Connecticut Light & Power filed its own request Friday, asking for a 25 percent increase.
CL&P said it needs the additional money to cover the cost of electricity, which has been exacerbated by limited natural-gas pipeline capacity.
