New Haven electric utility United Illuminating has obtained the LEED gold designation for its operations facilities in Orange by the U.S. Green Building Council.
UI obtained the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, or LEED, designation for the two buildings housing 1,100 employees. The Orange facility off Marsh Hill Road opened in April following two years of construction.
The energy efficient design are expected to reduce the company’s electricity usage by 2,300 megawatt hours annually.
The environmental features include recycled demolition debris, light reflecting roofs and windows, renewable energy, lighting sensors, and water efficient bathrooms.
