UConn’s Hartford campus gets housing scholarship gift from The Hartford

The Hartford has given a $500,000 gift to provide housing scholarships for UConn students.

The insurer provided the funding to the UConn Foundation specifically to help students in a new residence hall on Pratt Street that will open in fall 2026.

The university is currently developing a former law office at 64 Pratt St. into a residential space. It says the aim is to create a community-focused living experience for students. The scholarships will help ensure that applicants with financial need can access the new apartment-style housing, which will accommodate 200 students.

“This investment in our students is also an investment in Hartford’s future,” said Mark Overmyer-Velázquez, UConn Hartford’s campus dean and chief administrative officer. “Together we are helping to create a more vibrant, dynamic downtown where students can live, learn, and contribute to the city’s growth.”

About 86% of students at the UConn Hartford campus received some form of financial aid last year. Approximately 58% received federal Pell Grants.

In a survey, about 70% of UConn Hartford students said they would like student housing, but it would need to be affordable since many live with their parents.

This is The Hartford’s second major gift to UConn in recent years. In 2021, the insurance company gave $1 million to create The Hartford Scholars Program, which provided financial support and mentoring for 50 UConn Hartford students.

Last year, Travelers Cos. also donated $500,000 to help cover room and board costs for UConn students who will live at a planned 200-bed residence hall on Pratt Street in downtown Hartford.
