UConn, Yale, Eastern tops in annual college rankings report

The University of Connecticut ranked 20th nationwide, tying two other schools in the U.S. News & World 2017 report of top-ranked national public universities.

UConn tied with the University of Maryland, College Park, and Purdue University, West Lafayette, according to the rankings, which were released Tuesday. UConn slipped from 19th last year but remains in the top 25 nationwide.

Among national universities, UConn ranks 60th, also in a tie with those two schools, as well as Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Syracuse University and Fordham University.

UConn President Susan Herbst said the school has moved up from No. 38 among national public universities 15 years ago to being a top 25 school for the last six years. “We intend to remain there,” she said, noting that a school’s overall trajectory and not isolated ups and downs is what to watch.

UConn’s strengths include its retention and graduation rates, academic reputation and academic quality of incoming classes, she said.

Yale University again ranked third in the national rankings, tied with the University of Chicago this year. The university does not comment on rankings, a spokesman said.

Eastern Connecticut State University moved up seven spots among North region universities this year.

Eastern President Elsa Nunez attributed the favorable ranking to the school’s “commitment to academic excellence, our focus on student engagement and the introduction of new majors.”
