UConn to pay $1.2M to five sexual assault victims

UConn said it has settled a lawsuit filed last year by five women who alleged that the school mishandled allegations of rape and sexual assault.

The current and former students will receive varying amounts of the $1.2 million settlement, according to a July 8  court document UConn released Friday. The settlement said plaintiffs’ attorneys will dismiss the lawsuit.

UConn said the settlements, in which it does not admit any violation of law, helps “avoid the lengthy and expensive process of litigating the disputes claims at trial.”

The suit alleged that UConn had violated Title IX, part of a federal law that forbids schools that receive federal funds from discriminating on the basis of gender.

Both sides acknowledge in the settlement that UConn had taken steps prior to the lawsuit to bolster its policies on sexual harassment and rape reporting, and that since the suit, the school has enhanced its sexual harassment and violence training program for management-level employees, established a new assistant dean position to coordinate services to crime victims, added two staff investigators and taken other measures.
