UConn is expected to announce Wednesday a new partnership with an Oregon-based microscopy and materials science company that will include creation of a research center at the school’s new technology park.
UConn and FEI Company plan to establish a cutting-edge center for microscopy and materials science research with some of the world’s most advanced electron microscopes, the school said.
Those microscopes allow researchers to view and manipulate metals and other materials at the atomic level, which can have real-life applications—such as allowing manufacturers to build stronger, lighter parts for everything from jet engine fan blades to solar panels, biomedical joint replacements, and automotive components, UConn said.
FEI Company, which also has locations in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Texas, supplies scientific instruments for nanoscale science and research, according to its website.
The partnership will be announced during UConn’s board of trustees meeting in Storrs, the school said.
