UConn to install UTC fuel cell

United Technologies Corp. is supplying the University of Connecticut with a 400-kilowatt fuel cell to power the buildings at its Storrs campus starting in the spring, the university announced on Wednesday.

South Windsor-based UTC Power manufactured and sold UConn the fuel cell, which will provide electricity, heat and cooling to the Mansfield Depot campus buildings, which are near the main campus in Storrs. UTC Power is a subsidiary of Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp.

The fuel cell is part of UConn’s 2010 Climate Action Plan that strives for a carbon-neutral Storrs by 2050. The plan includes infrastructure improvements, new technologies and greater use of alternative fuel sources.

The fuel cell converts natural gas into electricity and heat through an electrochemical process with a byproduct of water.
