UConn thumps in the classroom, too

Adding to its long list of accomplishments on the basketball court and gridiron, a new nonsports ranking shows the University of Connecticut continues to outscore many of its peers in delivering the best education for the money.

That’s according to Kiplinger Personal Finance, which has UConn holding the No. 32 spot on its annual Kiplinger 100 list of best public colleges for the money. UConn improved from No. 34 on last year’s list.

Indeed, among public-school peers with whom it competes in the Big East, Kiplinger ranked UConn higher than them all, except for No. 28 University of Pittsburgh.

Rutgers University ranked 51st, and the University of South Florida at No. 55.

Even the University of Oklahoma, which triumphed over UConn in the Fiesta Bowl, comes in at No. 81.

But outgoing football coach Randy Edsall’s new school, the University of Maryland-College Park, is No. 5 on the Kiplinger list.

The former nemesis of UConn women’s basketball, University of Tennessee, is No. 74.

University of Illinois at Urbana-champaign, where former UConn president Michael Hogan now works, comes in at No. 45.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is No. 1 for the 10th time since Kiplinger launched the ranking in 1998.
