UConn said 34,019 high school students applied to be members of its fall freshman class.
It’s the highest number of applications the school has received, up from approximately 32,000 a year ago.
The number has been increasing since 2001, when there were 13,600 applications.
The school will select 3,500 class-of-2019 applicants at its flagship Storrs campus and another 1,400 for its five regional campuses.
More than half of the applicants seek majors in STEM fields.
The announcement comes a day after UConn President Susan Herbst warned legislators that proposed cuts to its state block grant would devastate its teaching and research.
