UConn partner receives $2M for buoy program

An organization that partners with the University of Connecticut and others to monitor a series of ocean buoys in the Gulf of Maine and off southern New England is benefiting from a new round of federal funding, The Associated Press reports.

The New Hampshire-based Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal and Observing Systems monitors buoys from Long Island Sound to Nova Scotia that collect weather and ocean data.

The $2 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration represents the second year of funding of a 5-year award.

Most of the money is going to NERACOOS’ operational and research partners to sustain the program’s data collection and forecasting efforts.
