UConn names three finalists for top provost post

UConn is considering three finalists to fill its vacant provost position, the top academic post at the university and second in command to President Susan Herbst.

The finalists for the position, left open after the departure of Mun Choi who became president of the University of Missouri, are: Craig Kennedy, dean of the School of Education at the University of Georgia; Sam Mukasa, dean of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota; and Chaden Djalali, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa.

All finalists will make presentations and have interviews with the campus community in open forums conducted today and next week.

UConn conducted a national search for the post, which is officially entitled provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and plans to name its choice before the end of the year. The candidate who is hired would begin working at UConn next summer. The post has been vacant since Feb. 1, said UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz.

There were no internal candidates for the post. Jeremy Teitelbaum, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UConn, is serving as interim provost until a new provost is in place, she said.

While visiting, each candidate will meet with deans, faculty, staff and students and participate in the 90-minute forums, where they will discuss their careers and critical issues in higher education and answer questions from the audience.
