UConn makes Sierra Club’s top 10

For the fifth year in a row, the Sierra Club has ranked UConn in the top 10 on its greenest universities list.

The nonprofit environmental advocacy group’s annual “Cool Schools” ranking prioritizes campus energy use, transportation and divestment from fossil fuels. 

UConn ranked ninth this year. Along with More than 200 colleges and universities took part this year. Only UConn and the University of California Irvine, which ranked third this year, have remained in the top 10 for five years in a row, UConn said.

Sierra noted UConn’s environmental curriculum and “eco-literate” student body, EPA research grants, locally sourced ingredients for dining halls, waste diversion practices and water-use reductions.

Several other Connnecticut schools also made the list. Eastern Connecticut State University ranked 126th, Southern Connecticut State University ranked 172nd, and Connecticut College ranked 180th.

Sierra received 202 applications from universities this year. There is no cost to schools to be included in the ranking.
