A batch of University of Connecticut Law School students is launching Wednesday the first of a series of workshops to teach consumers to advocate for themselves in small claims courts.
The pupils, who worked closely with the state Department of Consumer Protection to get up to speed on all relevant consumer statutes, will host the free small-claims introduction at 6 p.m. in the Reading Room of William F. Starr Hall at the law school’s Hartford campus at 65 Elizabeth St.
Monthly workshops will begin thereafter in January through April, authorities said Monday.
The tutorial is part of the law school’s community outreach, said UConn Assistant Dean of Students Karen DeMeola.
Kelly Wall, Class of ’14 law student and project co-chair, said the workshops are informational sessions only because the students are not yet qualified to act as attorneys or represent consumers in their individual cases.
Instead, “we will focus on providing information to assist consumers with preparing themselves for the small claims process,” Wall said.
