UConn is greenest U.S. college

UConn on Wednesday was named the greenest college in the country by Sierra magazine, a publication of the environmental group Sierra Club.

UConn earned the top spot for its 600 sustainability-related classes, its research toward the environment, the decreased water usage at the Storrs campus, building efficiency measures, trayless dining halls, locally sources food, and 2,000 acres of open space.

Sierra named three other Connecticut colleges as among the greenest in the nation. Wesleyan University came in at No. 83, Eastern Connecticut State University was No. 136, and Connecticut College was No. 142.

Sierra made the rankings available to all four-year undergraduate U.S. colleges and ordered the schools based on their responses to a voluntary sustainability survey. Sierra received 162 responses.

Earlier this year, six Connecticut schools were named to Princeton Review’s list of the greenest U.S. schools. In addition to the four named by Sierra, the two others were Yale University and Central Connecticut State University.
