UConn hires its first female police chief

The University of Connecticut has hired the University of Illinois’ public safety director as its next police chief, The Associated Press reports.

Barbara O’Connor will take over next spring from retiring UConn Police Chief Robert Hudd.

UConn President Susan Herbst told The Associated Press that her selection would be publicly announced later Wednesday.

O’Connor was previously head of public safety at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and has been chief at Illinois since 2009. Her UConn salary will be $164,700 annually.
