UConn Health reaches new multiyear agreement with Cigna

UConn Health announced Friday it has reached a new multiyear agreement with Cigna, avoiding a disruption for about 14,000 patients whose coverage could have been affected after the prior contract expired Thursday night.

The deal contrasts with UConn Health’s recent, more contentious negotiations with Aetna, which led to a temporary contract lapse.

UConn Health officials said the agreement was reached following months of “constructive negotiations,” and that there will be no interruption in coverage.

“This agreement provides fair reimbursement, which ensures continued access to high-quality, academic medicine for the patients we serve,” said Dr. Andrew Agwunobi, CEO of UConn Health.

Fair reimbursement was the main sticking point that led UConn Health into a months-long impasse with Aetna Inc. after their previous contract expired at midnight Nov. 30. UConn Health and Aetna eventually reached a new multiyear deal in February.

UConn Health also reached a new multiyear deal with United Healthcare in January.
