UConn gets $405K grant to study dairy farms

The University of Connecticut is getting a $404,966 federal grant to study the economic and environmental sustainability of New England dairy farms, Congressman Joe Courtney says.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture was part of the 2008 farm bill.

Courtney recently announced about $1 million in federal aid to help Connecticut dairy farmers hurt by this year’s historically low dairy prices.

“We have 152 small to medium-sized dairy farms dotting the Connecticut landscape, but that is a far cry from the hundreds that once operated in our state,” said Courtney, co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Dairy Farmers Caucus.
