UConn confirms move to downtown Hartford

The University of Connecticut confirmed Thursday that it will be moving its West Hartford campus to downtown Hartford.

The move, which was first reported by the Hartford Business Journal two weeks ago, will provide a major boost for the city as it pushes for more colleges to come in or near downtown.

Other colleges currently with a presence in Hartford include the University of St. Joseph School of Pharmacy, Capital Community College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

UConn currently has its graduate business school downtown as well.

UConn officials did not specify Thursday where they are moving to downtown, but HBJ cited sources last month as saying the school was negotiating to purchase the Travelers Resource Center at 200 Constitution Plaza, which was recently foreclosed.

“Moving the Greater Hartford campus back to the city, where it began and belongs, will better enable the campus to fulfill its academic mission, provide a major boost for downtown Hartford and save the university millions in the process,” UConn President Susan Herbst said in prepared remarks. “The campus was originally intended to offer an urban education near the seat of state government and there is no better place to accomplish that than in the heart of downtown. This will be a win-win for UConn, our students and the City of Hartford.”
