UConn celebrations begin in wake of men’s basketball NCAA championship victory; when’s the parade?

Let the celebrations begin.

Following the UConn men’s NCAA tournament championship win Monday night over San Diego State University, the state’s flagship university announced its first of likely several events to commemorate the victory.

The UConn men’s team — which won six straight games in this year’s tournament by an average of 20 points to capture the program’s fifth NCAA title — will return home to Storrs on Tuesday afternoon, when there will be a “Welcome Home” rally held at Gampel Pavilion, the school announced.

Doors will open to the ticketed event at 4 p.m., with the team expected to arrive at approximately 5 p.m., UConn said.

Meantime, no plans have been announced yet for a victory parade in Hartford, but it’s on the mind of Mayor Luke Bronin. During last night’s game, Bronin tweeted “Refused to talk about this all day … but time to start planning a parade.”

Hartford has been the traditional stomping grounds for UConn basketball victory parades. In addition to the men’s titles, the UConn women’s team has 11 national championships.
