UConn business school to debut fintech degree next year

Starting next year UConn business students can choose to earn a degree in financial technology — or fintech — thanks to a new master’s program in the cutting-edge field.

UConn’s School of Business will offer the program, which brings together courses in advanced business analytics, technology solutions, and financial services. Fintech focuses on sectors including blockchain, peer-to-peer lending, mobile payment systems, robo-advising and automated insurance underwriting.

“Companies large and small are eager to hire experts in this high-paying field,’’ UConn business school Dean John A. Elliott said. “This is a new, fresh, exciting and revolutionary space, and it offers vast opportunities to those who pursue it.’’

The first group of fintech majors are scheduled to start in the spring 2022 semester, and applicants are expected to have strong aptitude in business, technology and coding, along with “an entrepreneurial mindset,” according to the university.

A second cohort will be added later in 2022 at UConn’s Stamford campus.
