UConn board increases School of Medicine tuition

Students at the University of Connecticut’s School of Medicine can expect to pay more for tuition over the next two academic years.

The UConn Board of Trustees on Wednesday morning approved annual increases of 2.5% for Connecticut residents and 0.5% for non-residents for 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Currently, tuition for the School of Medicine for Connecticut residents is $44,666 for 2023-2024. Under the change, a 2.5% annual increase will bring in-state tuition to $45,783 for 2024-2025 and to $46,928 for 2025-2026.

For out-of-state residents, School of Medicine tuition is at $74,367. With a 0.5% annual increase, this will rise to $74,739 and $75,113 over the next two academic years.

The board also approved increasing the professional school fees by 4.5%, or $120, next academic year only, for a new total of $2,780.

In a letter to the board, Anne D’Alleva, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and Jeffrey P. Geoghegan, executive vice president for finance and chief financial officer, indicated that UConn School of Medicine’s tuition and fees remain below most local public competitor schools, particularly for residents.

They noted that a small number of students pay the non-resident rate, as out-of-state students may convert to resident status after one year of attendance. There are also scholarships and tuition waivers available for many non-resident students, according to D’Alleva and Geoghegan.

“While UConn graduates have lower indebtedness, especially when compared to other medical school graduates, we continue to carefully monitor student debt and remain focused on attracting the best-qualified applicants as future healthcare providers for Connecticut,” they wrote, in their joint letter to the board.
