Following days of rumors and speculation, the University of Connecticut Athletics Department on Wednesday officially named its new general manager for men’s basketball, while also promoting two others.
UConn announced it has hired Charlie Stevens as the new men’s basketball GM. He joins the Huskies after five years in the front office of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.
Numerous published reports had speculated that Stevens would take on the role. He succeeds Tom Moore, who in July announced plans to retire after serving as the program’s inaugural GM last year.
Moore spent 21 seasons in two stints with the Huskies, mostly as an assistant coach. He was on the bench for four national championships — 1999 and 2004 with former coach Jim Calhoun, and 2023 and 2024 with coach Dan Hurley — the most for any assistant coach in the modern era of the NCAA tournament.
Stevens began with the Spurs as a basketball operations assistant for scouting and strategy following his graduation from Clark University, a Division III school in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was elevated to grassroots scouting and player engagement coordinator in 2023, and two years later became the Spurs’ director of grassroots scouting.
In his role as GM for the Huskies, Stevens will work with Hurley on scheduling; roster construction; player development and evaluation; medical oversight; support staff oversight; name, image and likeness (NIL) strategy and operations; development; administration; and revenue generation, school officials said.
In a statement, Hurley said the GM position is one of the “most important in the new world of college basketball.”
“Charlie is a bright basketball mind who has worked in a championship-level organization at the highest level of the sport,” Hurley said. “His experience in the NBA ranks and the relationships he has built will be crucial to maintaining the level of excellence and success we expect at UConn.”
In addition to Stevens’ hiring, UConn also promoted Andrew Hurley to assistant general manager and Connor Creech to video coordinator and director of analytics for men’s basketball.
Andrew Hurley, the coach’s son, has been a part of the UConn basketball program for the past seven years, beginning as a walk-on for the 2020-21 season. He compiled 12 points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist in 43 career games over four years.
For the past two seasons, Andrew Hurley served as a graduate assistant, focusing on player development, practice planning and operations.
In his new role as assistant GM, he will serve as a liaison between administration and the program while assisting the head coach and GM in roster construction, player evaluation and development, practice planning, analytics, and NIL strategy and operations.
Creech arrived in Storrs ahead of the 2025-26 season and served as a graduate assistant for the national runner up team last year. He came to UConn after a year as a graduate assistant at the University of Texas, helping the Longhorns to the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
Before that, he was a four-year member of the University of Northern Colorado basketball team, working his way from walk-on to scholarship player and appearing in 53 games.
As video coordinator and director of analytics, Creech will assist the coaching staff in video scouting and game preparation. He will develop and implement an analytics system to evaluate player performance and tendencies while playing a heavy role in player development.
