UConn approves student fee increases for next school year

The University of Connecticut Board of Trustees announced Wednesday that it was increasing fees for the 2023-24 school year that will cost some students as much as $646 more a year.

That includes a $272 increase in mandatory fees for Storrs-based undergraduates and graduate students and a 2.75% increase in Storrs housing and dining rates.

The housing and dining rates, the university said, equals about $374 for the most commonly selected meal plans and typical housing options.

UConn said the total fee increase for regional campus students who commute will be $162. That fee rate, the university said, differs for regional campus students because they don’t have the same access to some of the Storrs-based services, such as on-campus media outlets and student-union programming.

The university said the fee changes do not affect the five-year tuition plan adopted in 2019 for fiscal years 2021-2025. That plan will raise tuition for resident and non-resident students by $660.

Included in the higher fees is a $90 increase in the Student Health & Wellness fee to allow for the hiring of four more mental health counselors and three more case workers.

UConn said the fees were adjusted and increased to account for inflation and increases in services such as mental health, among others.
