Two-thirds of CT homes are ill-prepared for extreme weather

As temperatures cooled today after a week of near triple-digit heat, an energy manager warns that nearly 70 percent of all Connecticut homes are not prepared to handle extreme heat or extreme cold conditions in an energy efficient way.

Direct Energy, which operates in 20 states and Canada, said a survey shows 32 percent of Connecticut homeowners believe their buildings are equipped for extreme weather.

While most Connecticut homeowners closed their shades to keep the warming sunlight out, most were unaware that turning down the temperature on their water heater would save energy as well, the survey showed.

Other quick fixes for energy efficiency – as recommended by Direct Energy – include closing garage doors, using celing and portable fans, turning up the temperature on the thermostat and replacing the filter on heating and cooling systems.
